While significant revenue traction is not a prerequisite, applicants must operate technology-driven, revenue-generating businesses.

Backbone Capital has a broad sector approach and focuses on high-growth B2B innovative technology companies with strong IP and evident potential for global expansion. Backbone’s focus includes but is not limited to the following technology sectors:

Enterprise Technology – companies developing the software infrastructure, applications and services that drive productivity improvements, revenue enhancement, convenience or cost reduction for enterprises.
Agriculture Technology (AgTech) – Companies leveraging digital innovations and emerging technologies to enhance productivity, efficiency, and sustainability across the agricultural value chain.
Healthcare Technology – companies leveraging digital and other technologies to create new products and services for the health and medical markets.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Companies developing and deploying artificial intelligence–driven technologies to transform industries and business models.
Financial Technology – companies developing software and other technology to better manage financial operations and processes in order to support or enable banking and financial services.

INVESTMENT SIZE
Initial investments range from $5,000 to $50,000, with follow-on capital of $80,000+ available for strong performers.

INVESTMENT TYPE
We provide flexible financing through Equity, Debt, and Working Capital instruments.

COMPANY STAGE
We typically invest at the Seed, Series A, and Series B stages, with opportunistic participation in later rounds.

LOCATION – We typically invest in Sub-Saharan Africa companies, although we will consider North Africa as well.

Backbone’s investment process starts with the Backbone Application Form. Once the application has been completed, it ensures that the opportunity is in our system. The investment team requires all the information requested in the application form. The accuracy and full spectrum of the data is critical in ensuring a well informed and timely response. If there is initial interest and a possible mandate fit, then the Backbone investment team will reach out to set up an introductory call.
